Simulated
Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation (SCAN):
What is it?
Planning a flight utilizing
aircraft performance charts, weather information, VFR charts and
answering general aviation knowledge questions based on the FARs.
Can you describe it in more detail?
Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation
(SCAN) is one of the "Big Three" ground events. The material that is
covered is all private pilot level material and there are no minimum
requirements to compete in this event. Although the knowledge base is
all private pilot level, it does not necessarily mean that the material
covered is easy. In fact, many flight instructors (CFI's) have a
difficult time with this event.
What are the competition
tests like?
The test is made up of about
40 - 50 questions based on a multi-leg VFR flight. Competitors are given
one hour to plan, calculate, and answer multiple-choice and fill-in type
questions. The questions that are asked can range anywhere from
performance to time/fuel/distance, weight and balance, FARs, weather and
various other general aviation knowledge. For the official NIFA testing
and event rules please visit
NIFA's website.
How do I become a part of
SCAN?
Well, first you have to be a
member of the Eagles Flight Team. Once you are a member simply attend
the weekly sessions hosted by the coaches. They will be glad to help you
along your journey to become a successful SCAN competitor.
