Simulator Event (SIMs):
What is it?
Flying precise patterns in a FRASCA type
simulator.
Can you describe it in more detail?
The simulator event "SIMs" are not included
in the "Big Three, however they are extremely complex and import events.
Competitors are given a sim pattern that contains anywhere from 9 to 13
legs with each leg being about 30 - 45 seconds. Each leg may have a
different altitude, airspeed, heading, or may be a compilation of
thereof. Competitors are graded by a computer grader that gives points
for each five feet of altitude, each degree of heading, and each know of
airspeed the competitor is off. The one with the lowest score wins
the event. The IFR event is similar to the SIMs event in the fact that
they both involve precise instrument flight, and both winners will have
the lowest total score. However, in the IFR event competitors are give
actual IFR approaches (ILS, VOR, or NDB) and have to fly it according to
the chart. The competitor will also be given a clearance which may amend
the approach in a number of ways. This event is not traditionally held
at regionals. Two competitors will be selected to represent ERAU in the
SIMs event. For the official NIFA testing and event rules please visit
NIFA's website.
