A Summary of NIFA SAFECON Competitions:
SCAN (Simulated Comprehensive Air Navigation):
Planning a flight utilizing
aircraft performance charts, weather information, VFR charts and
answering general aviation knowledge questions based on the FARs.
COMPACC (Computer
Accuracy):
Complex calculations with a
manual flight computer such as the E6B or CR-3.
REC (Aircraft Recognition):
Identifying various aircraft by make and
model.
Preflight:
Finding multiple discrepancies on an
aircraft in the form of a preflight inspection.
Landings (Short field and Power-Off):
Flying a textbook traffic pattern and
landing on a designated line on the runway.
NAV (Air Navigation):
Planning and Flying a cross country trip by
sole use of visual waypoints.
Message Drop:
Simulates dropping message from rescue
aircraft to rescues.
Simulator Event (SIMs):
Flying precise patterns in a FRASCA type
simulator.
Loening Book:
The Loening Trophy is the most
prestigious trophy awarded during NIFA’s National SAFECON.
This trophy is presented
to the most outstanding all around
collegiate aviation program in the nation.
